Native to New Jersey, the black bears is the largest land mammal living in The Garden State. Estimates on population are approximately 500 black bears living in Northern NJ. Exact estimates are difficult to obtain because New Jersey Shares its population of black bear with NY and PA. Native American settlers and early settlers used bear meat as food and for their fat which was used as an oil for frying and a medicinal base ingredient.
